  About Us

The Farm

Founded by Terri Martin-Yates and Rick Yates, Foxfire Woods and Farm is named after the road on which it sits. However, foxfire also describes the luminescent glow of mushrooms or decomposing wood in dark forests. The goal for Foxfire Woods and Farm is to serve as a “light” in the community by offering field trips for school systems, homeschoolers, and other youth serving organizations. Foxfire rents our large party pavilion for birthday parties and group gatherings, and offers family farm days, as well as partnering with organizations to serve as a site for service projects and volunteer hours.  Their ultimate goal is to teach about the importance of nature, healthy foods, physical activity, and social interaction on the ever-changing brain to improve mental and physical health.

Terri Martin-Yates & Rick Yates

Terri and Rick are both outdoor enthusiasts and avid gardeners! Terri  has dedicated over 30 years to helping children, adolescents, and families through education, counseling, and psychology, while Rick owned and operated a boat dock repair business for over 20 years on beautiful Lake Lanier. Terri is a licensed professional counselor and certified school counselor, as well as an experienced trainer in applied cognitive neuroscience and early childhood education. She served as the president of the Florida Horticultural Therapy Association and has worked with a wide range of students with disabilities. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Sandy Creek Nature Center near Athens, GA..

In 2016, Terri inherited 53 acres of land near Nicholson, GA where she grew up; she and Rick began to envision a nature academy and teaching farm that will help children and families connect with the earth, learn methods for growing healthy food, and gain an awareness of how green space and physical activity foster improved brain functioning and positive mental health.
